Are you concerned about your program being disrupted by demonstrations or strikes, like those recently experienced in Europe?  It’s a double edged sword; you want your delegates to have the opportunity of experiencing some of the most beautiful cities in the world, but its hard to predict when and where demonstrations or strikes will occur.  Here are some tips on how to avoid demonstrations or strikes when planning group travel.

Avoid demonstrations & strikes when traveling with groups

BeTravelwise provided some useful tips (in italics) in a recent M&IT report – and we have added some of our own – so that you can be as prepared for your group travel.

  • Do your groundwork before planning your event and discount areas where discontent is on the rise, or the destination is likely to be overcrowded.
  • Avoid travelling with a group during peak season as demonstrations and strikes are always planned to create maximum impact and disruption.  (You will also then avoid peak prices too!)
  • Impromptu demonstrations/ gatherings are rare and most are carefully organised and publicly announced through traditional and social media channels.
  • Keep an eye on the local media for any indication and work with your local DMC to identify any potential hot spots during your trip.
  • Demonstrations often occur around the same locations, such as government buildings and national symbols such as monuments.  If you are close to these areas, identify the timings and route of the demonstrations and re-arrange your event away from there.  This will ensure delegates are away from any disruption and it will not mar their experience of the destination.  A good DMC will have their finger on the pulse and be able to recommend the best course of action.
  • Demonstrations often coincide with important national anniversaries and the threat is heightened during regional and national elections.  Avoid arranging travel during these periods.
  • Don’t rely on distant sources for advice. In areas where social unrest is likely, ask your hotel representative or local contact for advice at least 24 hours before travelling.  Sound advice for individual travelers, but if you are arranging group travel be sure to undertake your Risk Assessment when planning the trip – this should highlight no-go areas so that you avoid them totally.
  • Set up a group travel app to stay in touch with all travelers.  LiveWorkAnywhere give some good suggestions  – all you need to do is ensure that each traveler has the app installed on their mobile before you go.
  • For small groups, group text messaging will also work.
  • Always have a plan ‘B’ – work with your agency and local DMC to have an actionable exit strategy in place.
